Common knowledge does not have the Beth property

Common knowledge is an essential notion for coordination among agents. We show that the logic of common knowledge does not have the Beth property and thus it also lacks interpolation. The proof we present is a variant of Maksimova’s proof that temporal logics with ‘the next’ do not have the Beth property. Our result also provides an explanation why it is so difficult to find ‘nice’ deductive sy...

It is shown how to construct, given a Banach space which does not have the approximation property, another Banach space which does not have the approximation property but which does have the compact approximation property. 1991 Mathematics Subject Classification: primary 46B28; secondary 46B10

Best Approximation in TVS

In this paper  we give newresults on the best approximation  in the Hausdorff topological vectorspace and  consider relationship  with orthogonality. Also we determined under  what conditions the map $P_{K,f}$ is upper semicontinous.

A Best Approximation Property of the Moving Finite ElementMethodP

The Moving Finite Element method for the solution of time-dependent partial diierential equations is a numerical solution scheme which allows the automatic adaption of the nite element approximation space with time. An analysis of how this method models the steady solutions of a general class of parabolic linear source equations is presented. It is shown that under certain conditions the steady...

A note on interpolation, best approximation, and the saturation property

In this note, we prove that the well known saturation assumption implies that piecewise polynomial interpolation and best approximation in finite element spaces behave in similar fashion. That is, the error in one can be used to estimate the error in the other. We further show that interpolation error can be used as an a posteriori error estimate that is both reliable and efficient.
